Cool Mediterranean Cruises

The new Cool Mediterranean Cruises site is now up. It's a promising start to an interesting new online publication. Look for lots of new stuff to be added soon. It has a Mediterranean cruise calendar, cruise line information, a section on ports, and last minute cruise bargains.

12-day Treasures of the Mediterranean Cruise

On July 10th, the Crystal Serenity makes a 12-day "Treasures of the Mediterranean" cruise from Venice (Italy) to Dubrovnik (Croatia), Rhodes/Lindos (Greece), Santorini/Thira (Greece), Sorrento (Italy), Sardinia/Porto Cervo (Italy), Monte Carlo (Monaco), and Rome/Civitavecchia (Italy). That's many of the most fabulous ports in both the eastern and western Mediterranean, all in one cruise. It's priced from $4,915.

The Serenity is Crystal Cruise's newest and largest ship. It is capable of serving 1,080 guests. However, like her sister ships, she maintains one of the highest space-per-guest ratios at sea, so you'll never feel crowded. Featuring many of the same popular public spaces as Crystal Harmony and Crystal Symphony, Crystal Serenity serves up innovation in the form of new dining venues like Tastes, Silk Road and The Sushi Bar. Amenities include complimentary bottled water, soft drinks and specialty coffees. 85% of the staterooms have verandahs and there are 100 penthouse suites with verandahs.

The six-star rated liners, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity, have won the travel industry's most distinguished hospitality awards and guidebook ratings. Crystal Cruises is continuously named best large-ship line in surveys conducted by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines.

It departs from Southampton (England) and makes port in Vigo (Spain), Palermo (Italy), Trieste (Italy), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Corfu (Greece), Valleta (Malta), and Lisbon (Portugal) before returning to Southampton. Prices start at $2,399.

Welcome aboard the one and only Queen Elizabeth 2. Thanks to a refurbishment from bow to stern, she is uniquely prepared to pamper you with the utmost contemporary comfort.

Whether you prefer days of leisure or stimulating activities, Queen Elizabeth 2 accommodates extravagantly. Enjoy a variety of concerts, films and talks. Indulge in swimming and aerobics - or soothing treatments at the spa or stroll among the Royal Promenade boutiques. Later, linger over cocktails in the Crystal Bar or the Queens Grill Lounge before sitting down to feast on QE2's culinary rituals - from a simple spa lunch on deck or cream cakes and Darjeeling at tea time, to casual meals in the Lido, or the gourmet fare in one of the formal restaurants.

Ascend to the Sun Deck Bar, where the views span the horizon. Applaud the piano player in the Chart Room or take a seat in the Grand Lounge, where a Broadway style is about to premier. Dance to the accompaniment of the orchestra in the Queens Room, toast the sunset in the Yacht Club, raise your voice in song in the Golden Lion Pub, or perhaps Lady Luck will entice you to the Casino.

Cruise departing from Rome? Tour like a local

Ken Dilanian in the Chicago Tribune has a guide to touring Rome "like a local". He's lived there for three years. He offers tips on where to stay (choose location over luxury), how to get from the airport to the city (don't take a taxi), what to see (the typical tourist sites are great), shopping (don't - you can probably buy the same thing cheaper at home), where to eat and other tips.
On a lighter note, waiting in line is seen as a sort of quaint notion in Italy: a nice idea but optional. So don't be afraid to assert yourself when somebody steps in front of you at a taxi stand or a bar. A sharp " mi scuse" usually does the trick. Bars, by the way, are where you go to get an espresso and a snack, and you usually need to pay first, then take the receipt to the counter.
